Timothy Edwards, 38, was killed during a home invasion on the evening of January 19, 2017, at his Douglas Street residence in Covington, Tennessee. Five men came to the house intending to steal drugs and money; three—Willie Somerville, Armoni Hall and Eddie Poindexter—kicked in the door and entered while Christian Sherrill and Darrell Owens remained in a getaway car. A struggle over a 12-gauge shotgun between Edwards and Hall began as Hall entered. During the melee, Somerville fired a 9mm pistol and fatally shot Edwards. Hall was also seriously wounded and later found a block away.
All five men were arrested. A federal grand jury indicted them in December 2017 on charges that included robbery affecting interstate commerce and using a firearm to cause death. Hall and Owens pleaded guilty. A March 2019 federal jury convicted Somerville on all counts; Poindexter and Sherrill were also convicted of robbery and using a firearm during the robbery. Somerville received life plus 10 years; Hall was sentenced to 190 months and Owens to 96 months.
