Timea Lashay Batts was 11 when she died in Hendersonville, Tennessee, on August 8, 2016, after returning from her first day of sixth grade at Knox Doss Middle School. Her father, Timothy Batts, initially told police she had been shot walking from the bus stop to their house; Timea was taken to a local hospital and died of her injuries.

Investigators quickly concluded the shooting did not occur outside. Evidence inside the Batts home shifted the inquiry to her father. Timothy Batts, 29 at the time, was arrested and charged with reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, false reporting, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His bond was revoked after a failed drug test.

At the July 2017 trial the jury viewed emotional testimony and home surveillance footage. Jurors deadlocked on reckless homicide but convicted him of being a felon in possession of a firearm and acquitted him of tampering with evidence. A plea agreement was later reported; specifics of the deal were not immediately public. Did anyone in the Hendersonville area know Timea or observe her route from the bus stop that day?
