Twelve-year-old Jajuan Hubert Latham of Knoxville was shot and killed on the night of April 16, 2016. He had attended an anti-violence celebrity basketball event earlier that day with his father and cousin’s memory was being honored. Hours later, while sitting in the back of his father’s SUV at Danny Mayfield Park in the Mechanicsville neighborhood, gunfire erupted during a large gathering. Police said occupants of two passing vehicles exchanged shots with people at the park; multiple shell casings from different-caliber weapons were recovered. A bullet struck Latham in the head; he was taken to a hospital and died shortly after 11 p.m. A pregnant woman who ran for shelter during the shooting later miscarried.
Investigators described Latham as an innocent victim and immediately interviewed witnesses and persons of interest. By mid-May police identified 18-year-old Marquez Travell Billingsley as a major person of interest and sought him on separate outstanding warrants; authorities said he was not yet a suspect in the homicide at that time. Billingsley was arrested on unrelated warrants on May 31 and returned to Knox County for booking. No homicide charges had been filed by late spring 2016.
Are there witnesses or anyone who was at the park that night who can help fill in what happened?
