On the evening of April 3, 2016, a verbal argument at the Lakeview Motel on Chapman Highway in South Knoxville escalated into a physical confrontation that ended in the death of 33-year-old Purnell Nimmons, a Black male. The argument involved 29-year-old nurse Danielle Wright; she left the motel and returned shortly afterward, at which point she produced a handgun. As Nimmons attempted to flee, he was shot in the back and was found deceased in the motel’s front office area.
Wright turned herself in to authorities and was arrested and charged with first-degree murder; she was held on a $1 million bond. The case went to a three-day trial, and on April 20, 2017, a Knox County jury convicted Wright of the lesser offense of second-degree murder. On June 8, 2017, Wright was sentenced, as a first-time offender, to a prison term within the range imposed.
Did anyone who knew Purnell or who was at the Lakeview Motel that evening see what happened or have information that could add detail to the timeline?
