On a calm October morning on J. Percy Priest Lake, 53-year-old William Gregg Hawkins of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was shot twice and killed after he walked from a fishing boat toward his truck at the Mona Boat Ramp. It is believed he interrupted a burglary in progress involving his vehicle; the assailant fled and no one witnessed the shooting itself. His daughter was present and witnessed the aftermath, holding her father’s hand as he died at the scene on October 16, 2015.
Hawkins worked 24 years as an engineer at the Nissan plant in Smyrna and was described as an outdoorsman, active church member, family man and firearms safety instructor. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office investigated but never identified a primary suspect; the location had no surveillance cameras. A $10,000 reward announced by the governor—and later increased by the family—has not produced an arrest.
Does anyone who visited the Mona Boat Ramp or the surrounding area that morning remember anything unusual or have information that could help this case?
