On the evening of October 3, 2015, eight-year-old Maykayla Dyer was shot and killed outside her home in a White Pine, Tennessee trailer park after a dispute with a neighbor child over puppies. Maykayla, described as fair-skinned and fond of the movie Frozen, was struck in the chest by a single shotgun blast fired from a nearby window. Her mother, Latasha Dyer, found her and held her as she was taken to a hospital, where Maykayla was pronounced dead.
The shooter was an 11-year-old neighbor, Benjamin Tiller, who had taken his father’s 12-gauge shotgun from an unlocked closet. Tiller was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in juvenile court. In February 2016 a judge found him guilty and ordered him to remain in the custody of the Department of Children’s Services until he turns 19. Maykayla’s mother later filed a $10 million lawsuit against Tiller’s parents alleging negligence.
What did residents of White Pine remember about safety, storage of firearms, or the neighborhood in 2015 that might shed light on how this happened?
