Kendale Garner was 19 when he was killed during a late-night walk in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 11, 2015. He and his brother, Demetrius Holmes Jr., were walking near Summit Hill and Hall of Fame drives when a verbal argument in a complex parking lot escalated into gunfire. Garner was struck in the stomach and later died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center; Holmes was shot in the leg and survived. Reportedly the confrontation stemmed from a dispute over a derogatory name Garner believed had been used for his girlfriend.
Investigators charged 17-year-old Donald Ray Hunt in connection with the shooting, transferring his case from juvenile court to Knox County Criminal Court. Hunt was indicted for first-degree murder in Garner’s death and attempted first-degree murder for wounding Holmes. Prosecutors said Hunt and another person fired at the brothers; the defense denied Hunt was the shooter, argued he’d falsely confessed to protect his brother, and challenged Holmes Jr.’s identification. The trial began in August 2016, with Hunt facing a potential life term with parole eligibility after 51 years.
Are there witnesses or additional information about the events that night who can help clarify who fired the shots?
