On February 6, 2015, outside The Lodge nightclub in Clarksville, Tennessee, a fight that began inside the club spilled into the parking lot and ended with the death of 25-year-old Fort Campbell soldier Terrence D. Harwell. Harwell was not part of the original dispute but stepped in to de-escalate and to pull a subordinate soldier away from the trouble. During that attempt he was struck in the head by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other soldiers, Kody McKinley and Raefeal Roundtree, were wounded in the same shooting.
Fort Campbell soldier Cornell Hurley Jr. was identified as the shooter. After his arrest he was charged with criminal homicide, and a preliminary hearing found probable cause to present a first-degree murder charge to the Montgomery County grand jury. A military panel later convicted Hurley of unpremeditated murder, attempted unpremeditated murder, and aggravated assault; he received 25 years confinement and a dishonorable discharge.
