John Benton Huddleston, 21, was shot and killed during a home invasion in North Knoxville on the night of June 26, 2014. Huddleston had recently graduated from the University of Tennessee / Pellissippi Culinary Arts Institute and hoped to pursue a career as a chef. The intruders, described as a group of five men—Dwaine Love, Braylen Bennett, Charles Boyd (also spelled Byrd in some reports), Rodrick Curtis, and Melvin King—forced their way into a residence on Valley View Drive intending to steal cash and marijuana.

During the robbery, violence erupted. Huddleston was shot and later died at UT Medical Center; an 18-year-old, Syndey Smith, was shot in the leg and survived. A dog was also killed in the incident. Investigators identified and arrested the five suspects; one, Dwaine Love, turned himself in. Prosecutors say Melvin King was the shooter and that co-defendants later cooperated with the state as part of plea agreements.
