Paul Andrew Hughes, 41, was last seen the evening of March 4, 2000, in Middlebrook, Virginia. Witnesses say he was with a companion at about 9:30 p.m., and at least one observer reported both men were significantly intoxicated. At the time he disappeared Hughes was described as a white male with sandy or blond hair and blue eyes, about 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall and 155 pounds, wearing blue jeans, a dark blue jacket, work boots, and a baseball cap.
Hughes worked as a carpenter at Western State Hospital and maintained financial commitments, and family and coworkers say he rarely missed work, which investigators note makes an unplanned departure unlikely. The only detailed account of that night comes from his companion, Timothy Balser, who said he drove Hughes to White’s Truck Stop in Rockbridge County around midnight, went inside for breakfast while Hughes played video games, and returned to find Hughes gone.
Rockbridge and Augusta County sheriff’s offices investigated but were unable to corroborate Balser’s account or find witnesses who placed either man at the truck stop that night. No one has seen or heard from Hughes since. Does anyone who knew Paul, or who was in the White’s Truck Stop area that night, have information that could fill the gap in this timeline?
