Ransom Duane McCoy, a 45-year-old white male, died on May 29, 2014, after an officer-involved shooting that followed a multi-agency pursuit in Bristol, Tennessee. The chase began when McCoy was identified as a suspect in the theft of a Ford F-150 pickup. During the pursuit McCoy crashed the stolen truck through a chain-link fence on Keith Drive, off Blountville Highway.

After the crash McCoy exited the vehicle and ran toward an officer. A Washington County, Virginia, sheriff’s deputy who had been part of the pursuit fired and struck McCoy. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation responded to conduct the standard inquiry into the shooting; the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.

The TBI’s findings were presented to the Sullivan County District Attorney, who determined the shooting was justified and cleared the Washington County deputy. No criminal charges were filed in connection with McCoy’s death. Does anyone have information about the theft investigation or the events on Keith Drive that night?
