On January 23, 2014, Jason Eubanks, a 36-year-old Black/African American man, was killed during a violent struggle inside a car that had crashed on Grimes Avenue in Knoxville, Tennessee. Eubanks was in the vehicle with Cheralynn Sabatasso when an altercation with another man ended in gunfire. Prosecutors later described the encounter as a drug deal that had soured; investigators concluded the man who came to buy cocaine struggled with the occupants for a gun and then fired, killing both Eubanks and Sabatasso.

The shooter was identified as Antoine Ward, then 40 and from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ward was arrested and charged in the double killing. At trial he said he acted in self-defense, claiming Eubanks had brandished a gun first, but the jury rejected that account. The jury convicted Ward of first-degree murder in Eubanks’s death and third-degree murder in Sabatasso’s death, and imposed two consecutive life terms. Ward’s attorney announced an intention to appeal.
