On the evening of January 15, 2014, 21-year-old Markel DeMario Owens was killed during a violent home invasion at a Walker Road residence in Jackson, Tennessee. Owens, a student and football player at Arkansas State University, was at the apartment with his mother, Chermaine Owens, and his stepfather, Johnny Shivers, when two masked men forced their way inside demanding money. Owens joined Shivers in a struggle with one of the gunmen and both men were fatally shot; Chermaine Owens sustained gunshot injuries and survived. Officers later reported a large quantity of marijuana was found in the apartment and believe Shivers was the intended target.
Arrests followed quickly. Derrick Wade was arrested the day after the killings and a handgun was recovered; his cousin Johnny Wade was captured two days later. A third man, Craig Taylor, was arrested in April as the alleged getaway driver. All three were charged with multiple offenses, including felony murder and especially aggravated robbery. Derrick Wade later pleaded guilty and received a 30-year sentence; Johnny Wade was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life; Craig Taylor pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and received a four-year term to run concurrently with a life sentence for an unrelated killing.
Does anyone have additional details about the Walker Road address or the timeline that night that could help clarify how events unfolded?
