David Leath, a 57-year-old barber from Knoxville, Tennessee, was found dead in his and his wife’s bedroom on March 13, 2003, with a single gunshot wound to the head. He had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia; his wife Raynella Dossett Leath initially told investigators he was despondent and had taken his own life. The medical examiner later ruled the death a homicide after scene evidence, and three shots were found to have been fired from a .38-caliber Colt revolver recovered at the house.

Prosecutors later alleged Raynella, a former nurse, had drugged David before shooting him and staging the scene. Scrutiny of Raynella’s past reached back to the 1992 death of her first husband, former Knox County District Attorney Ed Dossett, originally ruled a cattle accident; investigators found high levels of morphine in his system during a renewed inquiry. Raynella was charged in David’s death; her first trial in 2009 ended with a hung jury, a 2010 trial produced a conviction and life sentence that was overturned because the judge had engaged in misconduct, and a 2017 trial resulted in a directed verdict of acquittal for insufficient evidence.

David Leath’s ashes were buried on the seventh anniversary of his death; his daughter continues to maintain he was murdered. Does anyone have information about David’s last days or the investigation that could help clarify what happened?
