Dr. Hyram Kitchen, a 57-year-old dean at the University of Tennessee’s College of Veterinary Medicine, was ambushed and fatally shot in the driveway of his North Knox County home on the morning of February 8, 1990. It was the tenth anniversary of his appointment as dean; he was leaving for a breakfast meeting when the attack occurred. His car was found with the engine running near the front gate and his body about 100 feet away, suggesting he tried to flee. He suffered nine .22 caliber gunshot wounds, including defensive wounds to a hand and final shots to the head.
Neighbors reported hearing gunfire and some said they heard two voices arguing, but no perpetrator or vehicle was seen. Investigators described the killing as deliberate and possibly a crime of passion, and considered the possibility the attacker was known to Kitchen or hired by someone close to him. Despite extensive interviews and public attention, the case remains unsolved. If anyone knew Dr. Kitchen, his routines, colleagues, or neighbors from that time, please share what might help the investigation.
