Deputy Dennis Ray Armes, 28, was killed on the evening of March 15, 1983, while on patrol with the Roane County Sheriff’s Office. During a traffic stop on Highway 58 about six miles south of Kingston, Tennessee, the driver produced a .357 caliber handgun and fired three times. One round struck Armes in the chest. He managed to draw and fire his service weapon but it jammed; he was not wearing a protective vest and died at the scene. Armes had served two years with the department.

The shooter was later arrested, convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Parole hearings were held and parole was denied multiple times through 2016. Anyone with memories of Deputy Armes, that stretch of Highway 58 in 1983, or information about the case is asked to share what they know.
