Andre Ray Sandoval, a 27-year-old from Vernon, Texas, was shot to death on October 11, 2022, in a field near the home of 54-year-old Bradford Thompson. Neighbors had noticed Sandoval sitting in that field; Thompson’s wife had previously expressed discomfort about his presence. On the night of the shooting, Thompson confronted Sandoval and shot him multiple times. Witnesses reported seeing Thompson standing over Sandoval’s body, and Thompson was detained at the scene.
The Vernon Police Department and the Texas Rangers investigated. Authorities said Sandoval was not doing anything wrong at the time, though he was considered not wanted in the area. Family members remembered Sandoval at a candlelight vigil after his death, describing him as a loving father, son, brother, and friend who enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and football, and noting he had recently experienced a divorce and homelessness.
The community loss prompted calls for better mental health resources. Does anyone have information about Sandoval’s last hours or knew him and can add details about his life in Vernon?
