Omar Ursin, a 37-year-old African American deputy constable with Harris County Precinct 3, was shot and killed on August 28, 2022, in Humble, Texas. He was off duty and driving home after picking up food for his family when, at about 6:30 p.m. on Madera Run Parkway, someone fired into his vehicle. His car crashed into a tree in the median; Ursin was found with at least one gunshot wound, taken to a hospital, and pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported a dark-colored, newer model four-door sedan with tinted windows driving beside Ursin’s car before shots were fired. Three suspects were later charged in connection with the slaying: Douglas Wooten, Ahsim Taylor Jr., and Jayland Womack. Wooten was identified as the shooter and arrested in St. Paul, Minnesota, on November 27, 2022; court documents record Wooten’s claim that Ursin pointed a gun at him and others, although Ursin’s weapon was found holstered. Taylor and Womack had been charged earlier in September 2022 and were out on bond on unrelated murder charges at the time.
Authorities with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division and Crime Scene Unit continue to investigate. Motive has not been determined, and it remains unclear whether Ursin’s law enforcement status played a role or if the shooting stemmed from road rage. If anyone witnessed the shooting or saw the dark sedan that evening, please come forward with information.
