Erin Marigene Gilligan, 47, was shot and killed in Temple, Texas, on June 1, 2022. Officers were called to the 600 block of North Second Street for a reported gunshot victim and found Gilligan with a fatal gunshot wound; she was pronounced dead at the scene. This was Temple’s first homicide of the year.

A 59-year-old man, Tommy Lee Shelton, Sr., was taken into custody at the scene. According to an arrest affidavit, Shelton was found sitting on the front steps and told officers his girlfriend was inside dead on the floor. After being read his rights, he allegedly confessed, saying the argument that led to the shooting was about him sending money to his daughter. A .40 caliber Remington handgun was recovered from a drawer in the house. Shelton drove north to Bruceville-Eddy, then returned; he called his son in Hawaii to confess, and the son notified Temple police. Shelton was initially held on a lesser third-degree felony charge and was later indicted by the Bell County Grand Jury on murder.
