Gerald Carl Vanbrakle Jr., 42, of Del Valle, Texas, was shot to death on February 4, 2022, at a residence on Hayride Circle. He was struck twice in the face by a .40-caliber handgun during an argument that began while people were attempting to change a flat tire. A second person at the scene was shot and survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say Marcos Enrique Mendoza, 42, drove to the Hayride Circle address with a relative after their car had a flat tire, entered a trailer where Vanbrakle and the other victim were present, and fired multiple shots. Mendoza was found hiding on an adjacent property the next day and arrested by the Travis County Sheriff’s Office with SWAT assistance. Prosecutors charged Mendoza with first-degree murder; he confessed to shooting both victims and investigators reported the act was likely motivated by an intent to rob the non-fatal victim. Officials characterized the incident as isolated and not an ongoing threat to the public.
Does anyone have information about Vanbrakle, his movements that day, or witnesses who were nearby during the shooting?
