Jonathan Ray Espinoza, 39, was fatally shot on January 4, 2022, inside a residence in the 800 block of North El Paso in Tulia, Texas. Officers arrived at about 7:30 a.m. after reports of a shooting and found him with multiple gunshot wounds; he received first aid on scene, was taken to Swisher Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where he died later that day.

Investigators identified 37-year-old Fabian Saldana III as the suspected shooter. A firearm believed to be the weapon was found near the scene. The Texas Rangers led the investigation with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division and the Tulia Police Department. Saldana was arrested the next day in Amarillo and booked into the Randall County Jail held without bond. Nearby Tulia Elementary School was placed briefly on lockdown as a precaution. No motive has been disclosed and other circumstances remain under investigation.
