Ladarius Eugene Johnson, a 22-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on September 29, 2021, at an apartment complex on Bell Street in Amarillo, Texas. He was found with gunshot wounds, taken to a hospital, and died of his injuries. The Amarillo Police Department responded and opened an investigation.
Police identified Ladarius’s roommate, 20-year-old Dylan Tyler Mims, as the person who shot him. Mims was at the scene when officers arrived and was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Court documents say Mims told authorities the shooting was accidental, claiming the gun discharged while he was playing with it; other witnesses reportedly said Mims had pointed the gun at Johnson when it went off. Investigators recovered a pistol, an extended 9mm magazine, cartridges, and drug paraphernalia in the apartment.
Ladarius’s family and community remembered him for cracking jokes, singing, and spending time with loved ones. Does anyone have information about Ladarius’s life, the apartment on Bell Street, or witnesses to the shooting?
