Carlos Veliz Jr., 33, of Abilene, Texas, was found dead in the parking lot of a convenience store on East South 11th Street on August 31, 2021. Court documents state he had been shot about two hours earlier at a different, undisclosed location after an argument with someone inside a crossover sport utility vehicle.

Investigators identified 33-year-old Gabriel Hall of Sachse, Texas, as a person of interest. Hall had rented a vehicle matching the one seen in video of the argument, tested positive for gunshot residue on his hands, and a spent shell casing matching the shooting weapon and caliber was recovered in the rented vehicle. Hall was taken into custody in October 2021 and indicted on one count of murder by a Taylor County grand jury in December 2021; he also faced charges including unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of controlled substances and was held in Taylor County Jail with bond set at $505,000.
