Samuel Ricardo Anaya III, known as Pops, was a 19-year-old Midland, Texas resident found dead on the night of May 29, 2021. He was located in an alley behind the Kessler’s Hall event venue on Wall Street. Samuel had graduated from Midland Senior High School in May 2019, worked as a barber at 432 Hair Studio, pursued rap music, boxed with Midtown Soldiers, and was baptized as a Christian in January 2020.

The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting was carried out with a 9-millimeter pistol by 19-year-old Greg Anthony Barrera, who was 17 at the time of the incident; the attack was believed to stem from disputes among local rap music groups. Barrera was arrested and charged with Samuel’s murder; the Midland County District Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, and he was found guilty and sentenced to 60 years in prison with a $10,000 fine. He must serve at least half that term before parole eligibility.
