Jacob D’Shaun Ybarra, 20, was shot and killed in the middle of the night on April 18, 2021, while sleeping in a house near downtown Mart, Texas. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m.; Jacob succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The small community of Mart was described as deeply shaken by the unexpected violence.

Investigators say the shooter was 23-year-old Zamar Kirven, a former Mart High School football teammate. Kirven allegedly was under the influence of LSD and in a paranoid state when he shot Jacob and another young man, Sabion Kubitza; a third person, Shatydrick Bailey, reportedly survived an attempted killing. Kirven was arrested the same night and charged with capital murder; he was later convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
