Trevor Dane Riley, 23, of Amarillo, Texas, was found dead inside a residence in the 3400 block of North Hill on March 26, 2021 after a welfare check by the Amarillo Police Department. Authorities described his death as the result of a robbery gone wrong and initially suspected foul play.

An Amarillo Police Department Homicide Unit investigation identified three suspects: Colton Gene Pullen, Brent Bernard Smith, and Ricky Lee Peebles. All three were indicted on charges of capital murder by a Potter County grand jury on June 1, 2021; court documents say they were involved in committing or attempting to commit robbery on the day Riley was killed. Smith was arrested March 27, 2021, Pullen was taken into custody by APD SWAT officers, and Peebles was arrested in Lubbock on March 31, 2021.
