Johnn Johnny Villegas, 51, of Dumas, Texas, died of a gunshot wound to the chest on March 6, 2021. He was taken to Northwest Hospital in Amarillo and later died. The shooting occurred during a domestic dispute at the family home that involved his wife and his stepdaughter, Alejandra Urbina.
Dumas Police identified 19-year-old Alejandra Urbina as the suspect; a grand jury returned a murder indictment on March 29, 2021, and she was arrested. Urbina spent 14 months in jail before release on bond in July 2022. The Texas Attorney General later reviewed the evidence and concluded Urbina acted in self-defense, and the murder charges were dismissed in January 2023. Investigators reported a history of violence in the household and noted Villegas had past criminal charges including aggravated sexual assault of a child involving Urbina when she was eight. On the morning of the shooting Villegas was reportedly armed with a machete and had allegedly used it to threaten Urbina and her mother.
Villegas’ brother described him as generous but quick-tempered. He is survived by his mother Juanita Villegas; siblings Sylvester Villegas and Joelda Soto; daughters Sarina Kleman, Jocelynn Villegas, Leslie Villegas and Vanessa Villegas; eleven grandchildren; seven nephews; and three nieces. Does anyone have information about the household dynamics or the events that morning that could shed light on what happened?
