Eugene Gheorghe Mateiu, a 47-year-old man of Romanian ethnicity, was killed on January 3, 2021, in Lake Dallas, Texas. The Lake Dallas Police Department led the investigation and identified and interviewed several suspects as detectives worked to determine what happened.

The Denton County District Attorney’s Office later cited mishandling of evidence by the Lake Dallas Police Department. A judge dismissed the initial murder case on those grounds. Authorities continued investigative efforts after the dismissal.
