Jonathan Massey was 17 when he and his 15-year-old brother, Devin Massey, were shot and killed in their driveway in Fresno, Texas, on December 12, 2020. The brothers had just returned from the grocery store around 8 p.m. when a group of masked men opened fire. A third person was shot and taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office investigators concluded the killings were not random. Four men—Donovan Phillips, Dalan Phillips, Jaelen Allen, and Jaiden Gaines—were arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; the suspects were from the same community and knew the Massey brothers. The investigation involved hundreds of hours of work and drew intense local attention as the community pressed for answers and for action against gun violence.
