Donald Michael Best, 50, was found with multiple gunshot wounds on November 4, 2020, in the 1400 block of Taylor Street in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was taken to United Regional Hospital and pronounced dead at 8:32 p.m. Investigators determined he had been communicating with Cody Ryan Stage, 33, about buying a motorcycle for $2,000. Instead of completing the sale, Stage and an accomplice, Raymond Alaniz, 28, arranged to rob Best. The robbery went wrong and Best was fatally shot.
Stage and Alaniz were arrested several days later after a police probe that grew out of a building burglary in which a dirt bike and other items were taken. The two men blamed each other for firing the shots that killed Best. Both pleaded guilty to murder; Stage received a 45-year sentence and Alaniz a 25-year sentence. Alaniz also pleaded guilty to burglary of a habitation and was given a 15-year term to run concurrently with his murder sentence.
Does anyone have information about Best’s movements that day or the arranged motorcycle sale?
