Frederick Rice, 30, was shot and killed on July 20, 2020, on Mokry Drive in Corpus Christi, Texas. Rice, who had been visiting a home on Mokry Drive, was found with gunshot wounds and later pronounced dead at Spohn Shoreline Hospital. The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s office ruled the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
Detectives identified 24-year-old Jared Naranjo as a suspect and obtained an arrest warrant. Naranjo was charged with murder and held on a $1 million bond. During the trial, new evidence emerged that supported Naranjo’s claim of self-defense; that evidence led to dismissal of the charges and his release. Rice’s family publicly expressed frustration over the dismissal and said they felt justice had not been served.
