Barry Ray Hemphill, 42, of Amarillo was found dead on July 17, 2020, near the 100 block of South Tennessee Street with an apparent upper-body gunshot wound. The Amarillo Police Department opened a homicide investigation into his death.
Investigators identified 29-year-old Darius Qumaine Allen as the primary suspect based on witness accounts and evidence from the scene. Allen avoided arrest for nearly ten months before being taken into custody in Houston on April 30, 2021, by the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force. At the time of arrest he was held in the Harris County Jail on two counts: murder in Hemphill’s case and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Reports say Allen and Hemphill had some connection, but the exact nature of their relationship was not specified.
What details about Hemphill and his movements before July 17, 2020 might help clarify motive or the circumstances of the shooting?
