Clifford Earl Jones Jr., 24, was fatally shot on July 11, 2020, while lying in bed in his apartment at Jefferson House Apartments in Beaumont, Texas. His girlfriend, who was with him, survived non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Investigators determined the shots were fired through an outside window of Jones’s apartment.
Police later linked the bullets to another shooting at the same complex and identified resident Jirou Jerrell Zachere Jr. as the shooter. Zachere told investigators he mistakenly targeted Jones’s unit, thinking it was the apartment of his child’s mother in the unit above. He was charged in Jones’s death; at trial he said the shooting was accidental but the jury convicted him and he received a lengthy prison sentence.
Family and friends have been public in seeking justice, and the community has offered support. If anyone witnessed the shooting or has information about activity at the Jefferson House Apartments on or around July 11, 2020, please come forward.
