Jose Juan Mendez, a 41-year-old Hispanic man from Pharr, Texas, was found dead at his Feather Avenue residence after police answered a welfare check on July 4, 2020. His death became the focal point of a homicide investigation that led to multiple arrests and charges.
Authorities allege the suspects came to Mendez’s home seeking money and drugs. The probable cause affidavit states Abraham Gonzalez and a person identified as Castellanos held Mendez at gunpoint while Blanca Gutierrez and Flor Alexis Serrano searched the residence. During a struggle, investigators say handguns were fired at Mendez; the suspects then fled, and Gonzalez later returned to take a vehicle before leaving. Four people—Abraham Gonzalez, Blanca Gutierrez, Flor Alexis Serrano, and Juan Gustavo—were charged with capital murder, aggravated robbery, and engaging in organized criminal activity.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations assisted Pharr police in the case. Does anyone have information about Jose Juan Mendez, his time on Feather Avenue, or events around July 4, 2020?
