Alejandro Holguin Chavez, a 32-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot early on the morning of June 6, 2020, at the Country Inn & Suites on Soncy Road in Amarillo, Texas. Police found Chavez with a gunshot wound to the upper body and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified 47-year-old Christopher Michael Yager as the suspect; he was arrested and charged with murder and booked into the Potter County Detention Center. Prosecutors said both Chavez and Yager were under the influence of several substances at the time. A jury convicted Yager of murder in January 2023 and imposed a 38-year prison term; Yager has filed an intent to appeal.
