On May 8, 2020, 33-year-old Jessica Watkins was shot and killed outside a Walmart gas station in Garland, Texas. Watkins, a Black woman, was speaking with a man who was sitting in a vehicle at a gas pump when that man shot her and then fled. She was taken to a nearby hospital and died of her injuries.

Police identified 28-year-old Aaron Haas as the suspect. Investigators used the fleeing vehicle’s license plate to locate Haas at a home in Rockwall, Texas; he was arrested and charged with murder and remains in custody without bond set. The community and Watkins’ family have expressed deep sorrow and are seeking justice as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
