Trena Monique Jordan, 49, of Cleveland, Texas, was shot multiple times and killed on April 30, 2020, at her home on South Holly Street. The shooting occurred in front of the couple’s 13-year-old daughter after Jordan returned from visiting her aunt. Phillip Jerome Simmons, 57, was arrested soon after the shooting when he became stuck in traffic on I-69 and was found in possession of a 9 mm handgun.

Simmons claimed self-defense, alleging Jordan pulled a knife, but there was no knife at the scene and Jordan had multiple gunshot wounds to her back. At trial the jury heard testimony from Cleveland Police officers, neighbors, family members, a firearms expert, and Simmons’ daughter, who described the events she witnessed. The jury convicted Simmons of murder and sentenced him to life in prison with parole eligibility after 30 years. Jordan’s family attended court wearing Justice for Nikki shirts and described relief at the sentence.
