I've been thinking a lot about Derrick "Del Del" Anthony lately, and I can't help but feel for his family during this unimaginable time. I wanted to bring up something that seems to be getting a bit overlooked amidst all the legal proceedings and media coverage: the role of community programs in all this.
Derrick was so young, only 20, with so much of his life ahead. From what I've read, this tragic event has really prompted a deeper look into community support systems and interventions. I mean, could stronger programs for at-risk youth have made a difference here? It's heartbreaking to think about, but maybe, just maybe, this awful situation can be a catalyst for real change.
