James Jim Seegan, 62, of Carrollton, Texas, was found dead at his home on February 19, 2020. The death was initially ruled a suicide after a typed note stating so was found beside him, but a subsequent, months-long investigation concluded the death had been staged and that Seegan had been killed.

Detectives say Keith Todd Ashley, 51, a financial adviser and former nurse who had been a friend and frequent visitor to Seegan’s home, incapacitated Seegan and shot him in the head, then planted a semi-automatic pistol in Seegan’s hand and left the typed note. Investigators tied Ashley’s motive to financial gain: they allege he had been stealing from Seegan since 2016, shifting funds into his own accounts and changing Seegan’s life insurance beneficiary to a trust he controlled. Ashley then took steps to collect insurance proceeds and move money after the killing.

The investigation also found Ashley ran a Ponzi-style scheme through North Texas Money Management, allegedly taking about $1.1 million from investors. Seegan’s family and friends say the revelations brought some relief after prolonged grief.

If anyone knew Seegan, his routines, or observed visitors to his home around February 2020, please share what was seen.
