Gabrielle Barrera was a 16-year-old junior at Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas. She died on February 8, 2020; friends and neighbors remembered her as kind and involved in musical theater. Gabrielle was born on March 11, 2003.

Police say her 17-year-old brother, Zachary Barrera, shot Gabrielle inside the family home on Sumner Circle on a Saturday evening. Zachary was taken into custody without incident shortly after officers arrived and was charged with first-degree felony murder. He was held in the Comal County Jail on $250,000 bond. Detectives interviewed numerous witnesses and examined forensic evidence but stated it was too early to determine whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

The New Braunfels community was deeply affected; the school district provided grief counselors and the principal notified parents about available resources. If anyone knew Gabrielle or has information about what happened that night, please come forward.
