Valerie Hackett, 24, of Longview, Texas, was killed on January 30, 2020, in a retaliatory shooting at an apartment complex management office. The shooter, Brandon Keith Harris, had previously been arrested for assault and for unlawfully discharging a firearm at that same complex and returned seeking revenge. Harris shot Hackett multiple times at point-blank range, attempted to shoot the apartment manager who escaped, then fired at onlookers and tried to find others he blamed for his earlier arrest.

The Longview Police Department arrested Harris shortly after the shooting. At the time of arrest he admitted to the shooting and reportedly said he regretted not killing more people. The Office of the Attorney General’s Criminal Prosecutions Division handled the prosecution because of a conflict of interest in the Gregg County District Attorney’s Office; Harris was later found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hackett’s family and friends have spoken about their grief and the impact of her loss.

Did anyone in Longview know Valerie or have information about her routines or connections at the apartment complex that could shed light on that day?
