Cesar Cortes, a 19-year-old Hispanic student, was fatally shot on January 14, 2020, at Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Texas. The weapon was recovered after an extensive search and the shooter was arrested and later found guilty of manslaughter.

The case prompted rallies and vigils at the school and calls for increased security. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the juvenile was sentenced to 12 years and could begin serving in the juvenile system with possible completion in the adult system. Cortes was remembered as a bright young man who aspired to serve in the Army, and the school implemented additional security measures afterward.
