Steven Warren Daniels Jr, 22, of Denton, Texas, was shot outside his Denton apartment during a robbery just minutes before midnight on December 31, 2019. He was taken to Medical City Denton but died shortly after midnight from his injuries.

The investigation produced arrests in the case. Jacques Smith, who was already charged in an unrelated double homicide at Texas A&M University–Commerce, was charged with capital murder in connection with Daniels Jr’s death. Jalin Hargrove and Earnest Rogers were also arrested and charged in relation to the incident. Evidence recovered at Smith’s home in Rowlett is reported to have been important to the arrests. Smith’s record includes prior charges for aggravated robberies, thefts, and evading arrest. Authorities have said the shooting occurred during a robbery and have described the event as targeted, though the motive remains unclear.
