Rodney Antonio Hopkins was 36 when he was killed on August 26, 2014. Although he maintained strong ties to St. Louis, Missouri, his death occurred across the river in East St. Louis, Illinois, and was classified as a homicide. He suffered fatal injuries consistent with a shooting.

Hopkins left behind a large grieving family: his mother Linda Matthews, his father Rodney Hopkins Sr., his children Jaylen, Allison, Lyric, and Journee, several siblings, and his grandmother Dorothy. A memorial service was held at Southern Mission Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis.
