Zach Johnson was 24 and working as a tow truck driver when he was shot and killed on December 2, 2019, in Lake Dallas, Texas. He had been in the repossession business for about three weeks and was repossessing a vehicle at the Best Western Inn & Suites when the owner, Barry DeGeorge, fired 12 to 13 shots from a third-story hotel window. Johnson was struck while driving the tow truck, ran into several parked cars, and later was pronounced dead at Medical City Denton.

Police arrested DeGeorge at the scene and charged him with murder; the repossession notice was confirmed valid. DeGeorge told authorities he believed his car was being stolen. Johnson was remembered by family, friends, and colleagues as a gentle giant devoted to work, family, and community. A large last-ride funeral procession of tow trucks honored him, and his employer contemplated closing the towing business because of the emotional impact.
