James Coles, 46, of Hallsville, Texas, was shot and killed on November 8, 2019. Deputies from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office say the shooting occurred at 1588 Quail Lane around 12:12 p.m.; Coles was found with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Mike Smith.

Authorities arrested 55-year-old Busby Edward Jones in connection with the killing. Jones was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a controlled substance and was held at the Harrison County Jail. In December 2019, Judge Brad Morin reduced Jones’ bond on the murder charge from $1 million to $500,000 and set bond at $10,000 on the felony drug count after defense attorney David Moore argued for a more reasonable, affordable bond.

The shooting and the subsequent bond hearing drew attention locally. If anyone saw activity near 1588 Quail Lane on November 8, 2019, or has information about Coles’ death, please come forward.
