On November 3, 2019, 30-year-old Samantha Dragoo was shot and killed in Waco, Texas. Samantha was a student at Texas State Technical College, a Temple High School graduate, a former Coast Guard service member and a mother to a young son. Her body was found at the home of TSTC student Taylor McKibben near the campus with a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to the arrest affidavit, McKibben, then 20, called police about a disturbance around 1:54 a.m. and said Samantha attacked him with a hammer during an argument and that he shot her with a shotgun. McKibben was arrested and charged with murder, held at the McLennan County Jail and later released on a $75,000 bond. The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers were involved in the investigation, and TSTC offered counseling to students after the death.

The case report says the couple had been arguing for about two weeks before the shooting and that evidence suggested a more complex situation than the initial claim of self-defense.
