Byron Craven Jr, a 23-year-old African American man, was shot and killed during a homecoming party near Texas A&M Commerce on October 27, 2019. He had been brought to the event by his cousin Quadria Freeman to enjoy the college atmosphere and celebrate his birthday. The shooting also killed another man, Kevin Berry, and injured several others.
The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office identified Brandon Gonzales as the primary suspect and arrested him on a capital murder charge. Gonzales was released from jail on November 5, 2019, after charges were recommended to be dropped because witnesses were unwilling to cooperate and exculpatory evidence was found; Gonzales said he was in his car outside when the shooting happened. The Sheriff’s Office continued the investigation but faced significant challenges obtaining testimony and evidence.
Craven worked as a security guard at the GM plant in Arlington and was remembered by family and friends as kind and caring. Did anyone at the homecoming or nearby hear or see details that could help clarify what happened that night?
