Jashawn Dameron was 21 when he died on April 13, 2019, in Colorado City, Texas. He was riding in a car with friends when a revolver handled by 19-year-old Devante Martise Emerson discharged; the bullet struck Dameron in the back. Dameron was taken to Mitchell County Hospital and pronounced dead.

Emerson initially left the scene and later surrendered to authorities. He was charged with manslaughter for reckless handling of the firearm. The Colorado City Police, the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Public Safety were involved in the investigation. Family and friends said Dameron was expecting a baby boy; a GoFundMe was created to assist with funeral expenses.
