Justin Carter, a 35-year-old country singer from Tomball, Texas, died on March 20, 2019, from an accidental shooting while filming a music video. The shooting happened in his apartment in the Woodlands, north of Houston, when a gun being used as a prop discharged and struck him in the corner of his eye. His mother, Cindy McClellan, said the gun went off while it was in his pocket.

Carter had recently signed a management deal and was preparing for a 10-state tour when the accident occurred. No arrests, suspects, or litigation were reported; his death was treated as accidental and did not involve criminal activity or foul play. Family and his management set up a fund for funeral expenses and planned to release his remaining music in his memory.
